Studies in Modernism — a cycle of twelve
Jarek Filipowicz reworks landmark early twentieth-century portraits — Witkacy, Wyspianski — into a cycle exploring displacement, inheritance, and what survives translation across a century.
About
Self-taught, Filipowicz completed his first work in 1995 — a portrait inspired by Witkacy's Double Portrait of Winifred Cooper and a Doctor (1925) — before a career in business took him away from painting. He returned to the practice full-time in 2014.
He grew up in a city built on textile manufacture: his grandmother worked as a carpet factory operative, and his paternal grandfather, Stanislaw Franciszek Filipowicz, held a diploma from the trades association where Katarzyna Kobro taught decorative arts.
The Work
Each piece takes a landmark Modernist composition as its point of departure, reworked toward autobiographical and contemporary meaning.
Oil pastel. After Wyspianski's Mietek Resting on His Hands (1904).
Oil pastel on canvas, 100 x 120cm. After Witkacy's Portrait of Maria Nawrocka.
Filipowicz's first work, made before formal training was possible.
Abstract Work
A parallel, ongoing body of abstract and conceptual work, alongside the Modernist portrait cycle.
Titles and prices are pulled from your existing shop. Send photos of any of these and I'll drop them into the tiles — and let me know if you'd like individual buy links per piece rather than the general shop link.
Travel Photography
Available as fine art prints, canvas, framed, metal, and more, in the sizes shoppers choose most often — 8×10, 11×14, 16×20, and 24×30. Exact pricing and sizing are set on Fine Art America at checkout.
These nine are pulled from your live FAA catalogue — titles, locations, and buy links are all real. The images themselves are placeholders: send me the photo files (the same way you shared the paintings) and I'll drop them straight into these tiles.
An Earlier Cycle
A three-piece cycle first shown at the Koppel Project Gallery's A5 Show in 2018, made in response to the Grenfell Tower fire. Abstract poured fields carry pale, white-outlined figures.
